Why visit the Nuremberg Christmas Market, you ask?

January 28, 2017

If you live in Bavaria (Bayern), chances are you have either been to the Nuremberg Christmas Market or at least heard of it. Regularly ranked in the top christmas markets in Europe, it holds that place for solid reasons. Dating back to 1600’s in the medieval city of Nuremberg, the Christkindlesmarkt (Nuremberg Christmas Market ), takes place in the central square also known as HauptMarkt. There’s even one for children (Kinderweihnacht) in Hans-Sachs-Platz.

I remember leaving Poland after an amazing exchange semester right before Christmas and feeling so sentimental because I think its quite possibly the best time to be in Europe. Everything is well lit, there’s beautiful music on the streets, gift shops are aplenty and bustling; there’s hope and optimism in the air, and everything feels beautiful and magical. (Alright, I maybe a little bit of a sucker for romance). The closest I can compare to this feeling in India, is the festival of Diwali.

I absolutely loved the innumerable gingerbread cookies, amazing combinations of Nürnberger Bratwurst (Nuremberg’s version of a hot dog, but way better), souvenirs and trinkets from all over Germany, the colourful atmosphere and of-course the delicious Glühwein(hot-mulled-spicy red wine). There’s not much more that’s enjoyable in the German December, than a glass of Glühwein, some one you love and a Bratwürst to go with. Did I mention it’s also a great place to shop for presents?

I honestly think in my three months of living in Germany, I haven’t seen a warmer atmosphere than I have during the christmas markets. That for me, is special. I feel like we don’t appreciate being in the present moment and spending time with loved ones as much as we should, especially in the daily drudgery of life. Even though, I am fully aware I am saying this on a social-public platform, and that may account for hypocrisy, but I can honestly say being in the moment (without my phone, or laptop or tablet anywhere near me), is one of my top resolutions for 2017. There’s always plenty of time to tell the world what you’ve been up-to later. *wink*
